ixSystem has recently announced that there will be no TrueNAS Core 14 version. This means that 13.3 will be the last version to be officially released. TrueNAS CORE has now virtually reached End of Live status and I look back wistfully on the last few years of a very nice project. This is not immediately the end of TrueNAS CORE, but it is foreseeable.

FreeBSD 13 will be EOL in January 2026, which is the latest date, as no new packages will be made available after that.
At least ixSystems has a successor at the start with TrueNAS SCALE, which makes a very good impression in the current version, but is no longer based on FreeBSD, but uses Debian Linux as the basis. However, jails are a FreeBSD only thing. This eliminates an important part of my articles and the TrueNAS part of them.

Consequences

  • All articles are gradually being converted to FreeBSD only, pure TrueNAS CORE articles are archived and are also EoL.
    • Positive: iocage can now be replaced by bastillebsd.
    • FreeBSD is still used for basic services (web server, database, etc.)
  • TrueNAS SCALE is introduced, first tests are already running
