It continues in my article series: FreeBSD as a server. The two topics "S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and self test" und "Monit system monitoring also for ZFS pools" have been added.
Monitoring a server is essential. Particular attention should be paid to the hard disks and the data itself.
- The smartmontools should achieve the following: ‘Monitor all hard disks recognized on the system for their vital values, keep an eye on the temperature and send warnings by e-mail if something is stuck. A short self-test is carried out every Sunday and an additional long self-test is carried out at the beginning of each month.’
- Monit is intended to achieve the following: ‘Monitor all hard drives detected on the system for their occupancy, keep an eye on CPU and RAM utilization and send warnings by e-mail if something is stuck.’ In addition, with the extension for ZFS pools.
